Why Solar is Your Camping Companion

Imagine pulling up stumps at a remote beach or hidden bush camp. If you plan to stay put for more than a couple of days, or need to keep your perishables chilled while you’re out exploring, a good solar setup is non-negotiable. It's the silent, clean energy provider that extends your adventures without the need for constant resupply runs or noisy generators.

The Sunny Science: How Solar Panels Work

At its core, a solar (or photovoltaic) panel converts sunlight into electricity. Whether it's a rigid frame you bolt to your roof, a flexible blanket, or a portable folding unit, they all work on the same principle. Sunlight hits silicon cells, knocking electrons loose from their atoms. These electrons then flow from one side of the cell to the other, creating a current that travels through wires, charges your battery, and then cycles back to the panel. It's a continuous, self-sustaining process that keeps your power flowing as long as the sun is shining.

Panel Types and Efficiency: Watts Per Square Metre vs. Watts Per Kilogram

When comparing panels, two key efficiency metrics come into play:

  1. Watts Per Square Metre (Size Efficiency): Direct, clear sunlight delivers around 1000 watts of energy per square metre. A quality solar panel will convert roughly 16-17 per cent of this into usable electricity. So, a one-square-metre panel in ideal conditions will generate approximately 160-170 watts. Cheaper panels often fall short of this, delivering less power for the same physical footprint.

  2. Watts Per Kilogram (Weight Efficiency): For four-wheel drives and portable setups where every kilogram counts, this metric is vital.

    • Traditional Rigid Panels (Monocrystalline/Polycrystalline): Typically framed with alloy, these robust panels are great for fixed roof mounts or sturdy portable setups. They usually generate around 10 watts per kilogram.
    • Amorphous Panels (Flexible/Solar Blankets): These shine in the weight department, often generating upwards of 25 watts per kilogram. This makes them incredibly efficient for reducing payload, but they do come with a significantly higher price tag.

So, while rigid panels might be more space-efficient, flexible amorphous panels are often the winner for weight-conscious travellers.

Maximising Your Output: The 'Size of Shadow' Principle

Getting the most out of your solar panels isn't just about the panel itself; it's about how you position it. Think of it like this: the larger the shadow your panel casts on the ground behind it, the more direct sunlight it's absorbing, and therefore, the more power it's generating.

To achieve maximum output, your panel needs to be perpendicular (at a 90-degree angle) to the sun. If your panel is angled at, say, 45 degrees to the sun, it will only generate about 70 per cent of its potential power (a little bit of trigonometry from high school comes in handy!).

Remember, this doesn't even account for factors like reflected light or a dirty panel surface, both of which will further reduce efficiency. So, whether you're setting up a folding panel or adjusting a roof-mounted one, always aim to maximise that shadow and keep your panels clean.

The Enemy of Solar: Shade

While 'Size of Shadow' is good, actual shadow on the panel is bad – very bad. For optimal performance, your solar panels need to be in full, direct sunshine.

  • Monocrystalline panels are particularly susceptible to shading. Even 10 per cent shading over a portion of the panel can drastically reduce its energy output, often to near zero.
  • Amorphous panels tend to handle partial shading a little better, still experiencing a reduction in output, but not as dramatically as monocrystalline.

Always scout your campsite for potential shade sources – trees, awnings, or even roof racks can cast shadows that cripple your solar output throughout the day.

Regulators and Chargers: Making the Connection

Understanding how your solar panel connects to your battery system is crucial.

Many modern dual-input DC-DC chargers, especially those designed for four-wheel drive setups, come with their own sophisticated Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) solar regulators built-in. These chargers are designed to take an unregulated input from your solar panel.

Why is this important? If your solar panel has an integrated regulator that you can't bypass, and you connect it to the solar input of a DC-DC charger that also has one, you'll likely run into issues. The charger's solar input may not even activate, preventing your battery from charging.

If your panel has an inbuilt regulator that can't be switched off or bypassed, your best bet is to connect that panel directly to your auxiliary battery, or to the main battery/alternator input on your charger (if the charger supports it) rather than its dedicated solar input. Always consult your charger's manual to ensure correct wiring.

How Much Power Do You Really Need?

Before you start panel shopping, you need to calculate your daily power consumption. Grab a pen and paper and list every appliance you plan to run, along with its wattage and how long you'll use it each day:

  • 12V Fridge: (e.g., 50W x 10 hours/day running time = 500Wh)
  • LED Lights: (e.g., 20W x 4 hours/day = 80Wh)
  • Phone/USB Charger: (e.g., 12W x 2 hours/day = 24Wh)
  • Inverter for Laptop/Camera: (e.g., 100W x 1 hour/day = 100Wh)

Add up all your daily watt-hours (Wh). Let's say your total is 704Wh per day. To translate this into battery capacity and solar needs, you'll typically work with 12V systems.

  • Total Amps per day = Total Wh / 12V (e.g., 704Wh / 12V = 58.67 Amp-hours (Ah) per day).

This tells you that you'll need a solar setup capable of replenishing at least 59Ah into your battery each day, assuming good sunlight. Compare this against your auxiliary battery capacity (e.g., a 100Ah battery could theoretically run this for just over a day without recharge). Aim for a solar array that can comfortably replace your daily draw, with a bit of buffer for cloudy days.

Are Cheaper Panels Any Good?

While the initial cost of budget panels can be appealing, they often come with compromises. They typically have lower efficiency (meaning you need a physically larger panel for the same output), may use lower-quality components, and might not last as long in harsh Aussie conditions. For reliable, long-term power in the great outdoors, investing in a reputable, quality panel usually pays dividends.
