Solar Insights Pty Ltd ("Solar Insights", "we", "us") operates solarinsights.com.au. We are committed to handling your personal information in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs). This policy explains what we collect, why, and who we share it with.
1. What we collect
We collect personal information you choose to give us through forms on this site:
- Contact form: your name, email address, and message.
- Newsletter signup: your email address.
We do not collect solar quote requests ourselves. Quotes are handled by our affiliate partner SolarQuotes (see section 3). If you enter a postcode in one of our quote boxes, we pass that postcode to SolarQuotes in the link so you don't have to type it again; we do not store it.
We also automatically collect limited technical information when you visit: pages viewed, approximate location derived from your IP address (state level), device and browser type, and referral source. See sections 4 and 5.
2. How we use your information — including contact by email
If you submit your details through any form on this website, you consent to us contacting you by email about your enquiry or related solar information. Newsletter subscribers receive our email updates and can unsubscribe at any time via the link in every email.
3. Solar quotes are handled by SolarQuotes
All solar quote requests on this site are handled by our affiliate partner, SolarQuotes (solarquotes.com.au). When you click a "Get Quotes" button or link, including the pop-up shown on this site, you leave Solar Insights and go to the SolarQuotes website. Any details you enter there are collected by SolarQuotes, not by us, and are handled under the SolarQuotes privacy policy, including how SolarQuotes shares your details with installers who may then contact you.
We do not receive the personal details you give SolarQuotes. We may receive aggregated reporting (such as the number of quote requests referred from this site) so that we can be paid our affiliate commission. Please read the SolarQuotes privacy policy before submitting a quote request.
4. Third-party services we use
- Form processing: our contact forms are processed by Formspree and our newsletter by Brevo. Your submissions pass through their systems.
- Solar quotes: SolarQuotes handles all quote requests, as described in section 3. Links to SolarQuotes carry tracking parameters that identify Solar Insights as the referrer.
- Analytics: we use Google Analytics to understand how the site is used (pages visited, traffic sources, interactions with content and advertising). Google Analytics uses cookies.
- Location detection: we use an IP-geolocation service (ipapi.co) to estimate which Australian state you are visiting from, so we can show advertising relevant to your state. Your IP address is sent to that service for this purpose; the result is stored only in your browser for the duration of your visit.
- Hosting: the site is hosted on Amazon Web Services infrastructure, which keeps standard access logs.
Some of these providers store data outside Australia (typically in the United States). By using this site you acknowledge that limited personal information may be processed overseas by these providers under their own privacy safeguards.
5. Cookies and advertising
We use cookies and similar browser storage for analytics and to remember your approximate state for advertising display. We also store a timestamp in your browser so the "Get Quotes" pop-up appears no more than once every five minutes; it contains no personal information. This site displays banner advertising from energy retailers and solar installers; clicking a banner takes you to the advertiser's website, which operates under its own privacy policy. We measure banner impressions and clicks in aggregate — this measurement does not identify you personally.
6. Storage and security
We take reasonable steps to protect personal information from misuse, interference, loss, and unauthorised access. Form submissions are transmitted over encrypted connections. We retain personal information only as long as needed for the purposes above or as required by law.
7. Access, correction, and deletion
You may request access to, correction of, or deletion of the personal information we hold about you at any time. Email us at brendan@solarinsights.com.au and we will respond within a reasonable period.
8. Complaints
If you believe we have mishandled your personal information, please contact us first at brendan@solarinsights.com.au so we can try to resolve it. If you are not satisfied with our response, you can complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) at oaic.gov.au.
9. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The "Last Updated" date at the top reflects the current version. Continued use of the site after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
