During daylight hours, solar generation can easily meet electricity demands. Storage is only part of the solution. “Load shifting” also plays a crucial role. This involves moving electricity demand from peak evening hours to periods of high solar generation during the day. Several strategies facilitate load shifting:

  • Smart Homes: Hot water tanks, electric vehicle (EV) charging, and home batteries can be programmed to charge during the day when solar energy is abundant and electricity prices are lower.
  • Industrial Flexibility: Many industrial processes can be scheduled to operate during daylight hours, taking advantage of lower electricity costs.
  • Building Management: Pre-heating or pre-cooling buildings during the day can reduce evening energy consumption.
  • Incentives: Forward-thinking policies, such as offering households periods of free daytime electricity, can incentivise consumers to shift their energy usage.

The Future is Flexible: Wind, Storage, and Smart Grids

Looking ahead, a combination of technologies and strategies will be necessary to ensure a reliable and affordable electricity supply as we transition away from fossil fuels.

  • Wind Power: Unlike solar, wind power can generate electricity both day and night. Increasing wind generation capacity is crucial for meeting nighttime demand.
  • Storage Expansion: Investing in additional battery storage and pumped hydro projects will provide a buffer against fluctuations in renewable energy generation.
  • Smart Grids: Developing smart grid technologies will enable more efficient management of electricity supply and demand, allowing for better integration of distributed energy resources like rooftop solar.

While gas-fired power currently plays a small role in the energy market, its use is decreasing due to cost. The environmental footprint of natural gas compared to coal is also increasingly under scrutiny.
