Government Rebates: Making Batteries More Affordable

The Australian government is committed to supporting the adoption of home batteries through the "Cheaper Home Batteries Program," investing approximately $2.3 billion nationwide.

Under this program, eligible households can receive a discount on new battery systems installed with solar panels (new or existing). The discount is applied at the point of sale by accredited installers, simplifying the process for homeowners.

As of July 1, 2025, eligible households can access a discount of approximately $372 per usable kWh, capped at 50 kWh of usable capacity. The rebate is expected to meaningfully shorten payback periods and improve the value proposition of home battery systems. This program applies to battery systems sized between 5 and 100 kWh.

While some states don't offer specific, additional rebates, homeowners can often leverage the federal program in conjunction with local Virtual Power Plant (VPP) incentives offered by energy retailers. This combination can further accelerate payback times.

Payback and Savings

Previously, many homeowners saw a payback period of 7-9 years on their battery investment. Now, with the Cheaper Home Batteries Program, payback periods are expected to shorten to around 5-7 years in many cases, depending on factors such as your energy consumption and tariff rates.
